Vibrant notes of Ripe Cherry and Red Berry Fruit come to the fore. The palate is elegant with delicious texture that combines beautifully with the fruit. A saline streak gives the wine a long, mouth-watering finish. Winemaking The single clone, 10/5, of Pinot Noir was handpicked on March 25th. The fruit was immediately pressed, as whole bunches, to a small stainless steel tank where it cold settled, naturally, for seven days. The clear juice was racked into another small stainless steel tank, whereby it fermented naturally for 6 weeks. After a three month period of aging on lees, then stabilisation and filtration, it was bottled at the start of Spring to conserve the vibrancy. Vintage Vintage 2025 started with some very cold pruning mornings which help to reset the biology both above and below the ground. Marlborough rarely hits -5 C and it made for some nice days of hand shovelling to warm up the crew. We were fortunate to get these out of the way before budburst and had relatively few frost events throughout the season. The hallmark of the Spring was small, almost weekly or biweekly rains, these helped to keep vines going and did not cause too much disease pressure. December saw some nice well-timed heat that helped to speed flowering. In this case flowering was almost too good and bunch weights across the region were larger than anticipated. With our minimal use of irrigation, we worked hard to control bunch weights naturally. Even with this effort, there was still a need for significant fruit drops at veraison to control quality. January 2025 will go on record as one of the coldest on the books. Ninety percent of the month was spent with daytime high hovering just above 20, with many nights dropping to below 5. March was wonderfully dry allowing for a slow methodical harvest. Viticulture Our clay rich Raupo vineyard, farmed following organic and biodynamic principles is located in the centre of the Omaka Valley. This vineyard has a gentle north-west facing aspect and enjoys high sunshine hours and minimal rain.
