Protected by towering mountains on both sides of the valley, this warm site has been shaped by the passage of multiple glaciers. Kopuwai Delta is situated at a narrow point in the valley between the Pisa and Bendigo ranges and lies at 225m elevation. The low vigour, free-draining, very fine schist-based soils feature loess, alluvium, quartz and rounded river stones. Extensive canopy and crop management is carried out during the growing season to ensure the grapes attained full physiological ripeness with great concentration, aromatics, and flavour. Yields on all sites are kept very low and do not exceed 35-38hl/ha or 4.5-5t/ha. In the vineyard this equates to one bunch maximum per shoot, no shoulders or wings, and a further green-thin at veraison. A beautifully expressive nose of bramble fruits, wild strawberries, mountain herbs and violets. The palate continues with raspberries, blueberries and boysenberries, with silky, fine-grained tannins and a pure line of acidity, pulling it all through to a long and elegant finish. An ethereal wine, showing the clarity of the vineyard in the bottle. Our winemaking aims to be an exercise in understanding and translating our stunning sites into wine as accurately as possible with a minimum of winery signature.
