Thomson's Block Syrah 2020

Producentens tekst (engelsk): A beguiling combination of ripe raspberries and blackberries, roses, red liquorice, Chinese five-spice, and fresh cedar, lead to a concentrated palate with superb purity of flavour and vitality thanks to a fine backbone of natural acidity. Dense, fine-grained tannins and cedary oak beautifully frame the wine providing a taut yet silky texture, that leads to long, succulent, spicy finish. An intensely perfumed Syrah of individual style and character that deftly illustrates the beauty the variety is famous for. Drink from 2022 to 2037. Vineyard: Thomson’s Block is an elevated, north-facing hillside vineyard located on Roys Hill behind the winery. Principally sandstone over limestone it was planted to Syrah in 2007. A sheltered site, it is warm during the day but cool at night due to the air draining onto the plains below. This attribute, combined with the location, topography, and soil type, produces Syrah in a more elegant mold. Think florals, red fruits, supple tannins, and vibrant acidity. Winemaking: Hand-picked whole bunches of Syrah were gently plunged by foot (traditional pigéage) in two small stainless steel open-top fermenters. After 19 days on skins the wines were pressed, allowed to settle for brief period, before being transferred to brand new 228-litre French oak barriques. After 14 months maturation the wines were racked out of barrel, blended, and bottled in July 2021 with no fining and minimal filtration.
